Greater mouse eared bat Myotis myotis,

This is the largest relative of the Daubenton's bat in this country. Unfortunately there is only one known member of this species left. It is found during annual hibernation checks in Sussex. It is a long lived species, maybe 35 years, so it is possible it will be around for some time, although however the species is technically extinct from Britain.

Whiskered/Brandts/Alcathoe bat

Whiskered/Brandts/Alcathoe bats are the smallest in the Myotis genus. In the field they are impossible to differentiate but in the hand there are differences in the tragus, teeth and overall dimensions. There is a roost of these bats nearby at Hampton Court (not at the palace) and it is possible that these bats come to swarm during the autumn.

Pond Bat

Pond bat is similar to a large Daubenton, although we do not have them in this country....or do we?

Geoffroy's bat in Britain

A bat usually found in continental Europe has been discovered in the UK for the first time, according to the National Trust.

A male Geoffroy's bat (Myotis emarginatus) was found by an ecologist carrying out a survey on trust land in the South Downs in West Sussex.

The species, which weighs between six and nine grams, is usually found on the edge of woodland scrub and grassland.

The trust think the bat may have started to extend its habitat range.
